A matchup that featured two World Cup qualifying teams and set an attendance record for soccer in the state of Florida earns the 7th spot on the Top 10 Moments at Sun Life Stadium in 2013. A crowd of 71,124 were in attendance on November 16th to see Brazil defeat Honduras by a score of 5-0. The electric crowd eclipsed the previous attendance record of 70,080 set at Sun Life Stadium on August 3, 2011 when Barcelona took on Chivas. Benard opened the scoring for Brazil in the 22nd minute of the game to take an early 1-0 lead.
At No. 8 on the Top 10 Moments at Sun Life Stadium in 2013, we matchup between two rivals; the Miami Hurricanes and the Florida Gators. A crowd of 76,869 were on hand, setting a new attendance record for the University of Miami at Sun Life Stadium, to see the Hurricanes defeat the #9 ranked Gators by a score of 21-16. This was the 55th meeting between the two rivals, and the first meeting between the two schools in Miami in more than 10 years.
The No. 9 moment of 2013 came early in Miami Dolphins season, as Ryan Tannnehill capped off a 75 yard drive with a one yard touchdown pass to tight end Dions Sims with 38 seconds remaining to lead the Miami Dolphins past the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 27-23. The victory helped the Dolphins improve to 3-0 on the season. A crowd of 70,660 ecstatic fans were on hand to witness the game winning drive, on which Tannehill completed nine of 12 passes for 69 yards, including go ahead the one yard touchdown to Sims.
Coming in at Number 10 in Sun Life Stadium’s Top 10 Moments of 2013 is the Dolphins Cycling Challenge. DCC IV took to the streets of South Florida over November 2nd and 3rd, with more than 2,500 cyclists riding along six different routes to raise funds for the University of Miami Comprehensive Cancer Center. This year’s ride has already raised more than $3.1 million for the fight against cancer. Just before dawn on November 2nd, riders departed Sun Life Stadium as the Miami Century and Miami 30 rides began.
Home to more than 100 events in the past year alone, 2013 was another action packed year at Sun Life Stadium with world class events both large and small ranging from the BCS National Championship game to concerts and NFL games. It is clear that Sun Life Stadium was the home of events and excitement in South Florida. As the year comes to close, we look back on what made 2013 so great.
