The countdown to the Guinness International Champions that will host eight of the best soccer clubs in the world is now only three days away from kick off! Today’s team preview will highlight one of the world’s most storied and popular club teams, A.C. Milan.
Milan has spent the majority of its existence in the top flight of Italian football, Serie A. They are the second most successful club in the world regarding international trophies winning 18 Serie A titles, seven UEFA Champion League titles and four FIFA titles.
Milan ended last year’s club season with an unpleasant 8th place in Serie A. The team will look to improve this season with their talented and promising squad.
Italian striker, Mario Balotelli scored Italy’s winning goal in it’s opening match against England in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Last season, the striker scored 14 goals in 30 league appearances. Balotelli is known to be a set-piece specialist and is known to be a promising player.
Nigel de Jong is a Dutch midfielder and has played in two FIFA World Cups during his career, having won the runner-up medal in 2010 and placed third is 2014. De Jong is known to be a tireless and feisty player which earned him the nickname, “The Terrier”.
Keisuke Honda , a Japan midfielder known for his free kicks, dribbling and dead ball specialist, has won over 50 international caps since 2008. He has made appearances in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. Honda became the first Japanese player to score goals in two World Cups. He also holds the record for being the top Japanese scorer in FIFA World Cup history, scoring three total goals.
A.C. Milan is set to open the Guinness International Champions Cup with the first match on July 24 against Greek champions Olympiacos F.C. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
