ICC: Inter Team Preview

inter_milan_logoWe are now seven days away from the start of the Guinness International Champions Cup. The tournament will feature eight renowned soccer clubs from around the world, but only one will be crowned champion at Sun Life Stadium on August 4.

Our team previews continue with FC Internazionale, better known as Inter.

Inter is an Italian club based in the city of Milan. Inter is globally known as one of the most successful teams, having earned 18 Italian Serie A titles, seven Italian Cups, five Italian Super Cups, two European Cups, one UEFA Champions League, three UEFA Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and now FIFA Club World Cup. Inter, also known as Inter Milan, is the only club to have spent their entire history in the top flight of Italian football, Serie A.

Indonesian entrepreneur Erick Thohir became the majority shareholder of the club in 2013. Thohir also owns Major League Soccer club D.C. United. Inter is managed by Walter Mazzarri.

Inter’s roster is full of top-notch players, many of whom have made appearances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Inter stars Rodrigo Palacio, known to be one of the best strikers in the world. Palacio led the national team of Argentina to the 2014 World Cup finals where the team lost to Germany in extra time .  During his first year at Inter,  Palacio scored 22 goals in 39 fixtures. He continues to lead, netting 19 times in all competitions. He also made an appearance in the 2006 World Cup.

Brazilian central midfielder Hernanes is highlighted as one of Inter Milan’s best players with his accuracy and powerful strike to the ball. Hernanes played for Brazil’s national team in the 2014 World Cup where the team clenched 4th overall. In 2009, he was selected as best “Under-23” player in the world. ESPN named him “Best Emerging Player of the Year in Europe” and he also won a FIFA Confederations Cup with Brazil in 2013.

Recently departing Manchester United Caption, Nemanja Vidic  will join Inter at the end of this month. The ICC will be the first tournament with his new teammates. Vidic has collected many honors during his career including 5 Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA World Cup, three League Cup medals during his reign with United, and four PFA Team of the Year awards.

Other star players for Inter is Japan’s defender Yuto Nagatomo and Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

Inter will be highlighted in Match 3 of the ICC tournament. Inter will face Real Madrid Saturday, July 26 in Berkley California at the California Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET.
