The inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup officially kicked off yesterday as AC Milan traveled to Valencia for the tournament’s first game. This marked the first time that the two historic clubs have ever met and is also the only game of the tournament to be held outside of the United States as it was held at Valencia’s home ground, Mestella.
Robinho opened the scoring in the 20th minute for AC Milan to give them an early 1-0 lead. Minutes later, De Jong would net another goal for Milan in the 36th minute, doubling the lead for the club, which would be the eventual game winning goal.
Valencia did strike first in the second half in the 53rd minute when Dani Pargeo strike cut Mian’s lead in half. Valencia did have numerous opportunities throughout the course of the second half to tie the game, but their attempts fell short.
Both teams will now travel to MetLife Stadium, where AC Milan will play the winner of the game that matches Chelsea and Inter Milan. Valencia will take on the games loser. Both games will take place on August 4th.
All eight of the teams competing in the tournament will be at Sun Life Stadium on August 6th and 7th for the championship rounds. For more information on how you can see your favorite teams play in Miami, click here.
