Millonarios FC vs CD Olimpia Preview

Millonarios vs OlimpiaCD Olimpia and Millonairos FC, two prestigious club teams from Honduras and Colombia, are set to meet this Sunday at Sun Life Stadium during the Colombian Independence Festival.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.

Started in 1912, CD Olimpia is based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and is the nation’s most successful team, having won 26 league titles as well as being the only Honduran team to have won multiple CONCACAF Champions Cups.  Most recently, CD Olimpia was the winner of the Apertura tournament, defeating CD Victoria in the finals.

CD Olimpia is led by goalkeeper Noel Valladares.  The standout goalkeeper started for the Honduran National Team during the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, as well as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.  In 2011, he was awarded for being the top goalkeeper in the 2011 Gold Cup.

Other standouts for the CD Olimpia squad include Carlos Mejia and Douglas Caetano.  Mejia, a forward, played with the Honduran National Team in the 2009 Gold Cup, and Caetano, a Brazilian forward previously spent time with the Honduran club Real Espana.

Officially founded in 1946, Millonarios is based in the capital city of Bogata and has won the Colombian league 14 times.  In addition, they are only one of three teams to play every game in the Colombian First Divison, most recently having won the Torneo Finalizacion in 2012.

Millonairos is led by striker Fredy Montero.  The native Colombian starred for the MLS’s Seattle Sounders where he was recognized as an All-Star and MLS Newcomer of the Year.

Other key contributors for Millonarios include Rafael Robayo and Nelson Ramos.  Robayo, a midfielder, began playing with Millonarios in 2005, and is currently on loan to the club from the Chicago Fire.  Nelson Ramos serves as the team’s goalkeeper and was also a part of the Colombian National Team during the Copa America 2011.
