In ten days, South Florida football powerhouses St. Thomas Aquinas and Miami Northwestern will kick off the 2013 high school football season at Sun Life Stadium as a part of the Miami Dolphins High School Series. This historic matchup will be the first meeting between the two schools.
The Raiders come into the 2013 season as the defending Class 7A State Champions, finishing the 2012 season with a 13-2 record. The USA Today Super 25 has St. Thomas Aquinas ranked 11th in the nation in their preseason poll, while RivalsHigh 100 has the Raiders ranked 9th.
Miami Northwestern finished the 2012 season with a 9-3 record, falling to rival Miami Central in the regional semifinal. While not ranked nationally, the Bulls come into the 2013 season ranked 5th in the South Florida high school football poll by the Miami Herald.
Both St. Thomas Aquinas and Miami Northwestern are no strangers to Sun Life Stadium, as both teams played there last season. St. Thomas opened their season last year against Christopher Columbus High School at Sun Life Stadium, where they won by a score of 38-28. Last October, Northwestern faced rival Miami Central in their first meeting of the year, and though taking an early 11-0 lead, ended up falling by a score of 35-17.
The two teams are also no strangers to success. Between the two schools, there are 11 state titles and three national championships, with seven of the state titles and two national championships belonging to St. Thomas Aquinas, and the remaining going to Miami Northwestern.
The Bulls and Raiders are both looking to set the tone for the year during this early season matchup.
Following this game, St. Thomas will travel to River Ridge, LA to take on defending national champion Curtis, before traveling home to take on perennial powerhouse Miramar High School.
Miami Northwestern will next host a strong Raines team from Jacksonville, before facing Miami Central and Booker T. Washington, both of whom were ranked #1 in the nation in separate preseason polls.
