Ecuador has qualified for three FIFA World Cups in franchise history, with all three appearances have been earned within the past 12 years. The team’s most successful performance came when they eliminated England in the 16th round of the 2006 World Cup.
Felipe Caicedo is Ecuador’s leading scorer after securing seven goals in nine games. The striker is nicknamed “Rocky” as he will be a powerful driving force behind the success of the team in the 2014 World Cup. He is equipped with much experience, as he has played for six European clubs in the past eight years. He currently holds the position of striker for both the national team and Al-Jazira in the UAE Arabian Gulf League.
Walter Ayovi nicknamed “ Macaco” serves as Ecuador’s captain and left wing midfielder going into the 2014 World Cup. He currently plays for Pachuca of the Liga MX. He is the only player to play consistently in every minute of the qualifying matches. His experience in both of Ecuador’s previous World Cup appearances will be valuable to the success of the team in Brazil.
Antonio Valencia who currently plays a winger for Manchester United, has been known to be capable of extreme game-changing performances at the highest level of games and is expected to be a great asset to the team in Brazil this year. He has won the 2009 Football League Cup, the 2010 FA Community Shield, the 2010 Premier League and the 2012 Premier League awards along with being voted PFA Team of the Year in his debut season. Since making is Ecuador debut in 2006, he has won 60 caps and scored eight goals for this country.
The team is managed by Reinaldo Rueda made his debut has a Colombian Youth Coach as he finished 3rd in the 2003 FIFA Youth World Youth Championship. He also led Honduras to their first World Cup in 28 years in 2010. Reinaldo will play his former team on June 20 with an opening game against Switzerland on June 15 and the last Group E game against France on June 25 in the 2014 World Cup.
Reinaldo and players of the Ecuador national team enter the World Cup with heavy hearts after the sudden loss of their teammate, striker Christan Benitez as he died suddenly from a heart problem last July.
