ENGLAND-FLIPPERFor the first time, England’s national soccer team will play two friendlies at Sun Life Stadium in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. England will face Ecuador on June 4 at 3 p.m. ET and Honduras on June 7 at 4:45 p.m. ET.

The Three Lions have made 13 appearances at the FIFA World Cup and have secured a 14th in Brazil this year. The team has won the FIFA World Cup in 1966. England’s national team is one of the two oldest teams in football alongside Scotland.

England’s national team is managed by Roy Hodgson. Hodgson has managed a total of 16 different teams in eight countries. England is the fourth national team is has coached. He previously led Finland to their highest FIFA ranking in the team’s history. He also guided Switzerland to the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup as well as qualification for the 1996 Euro; the team had not qualified for a major tournament since the 1960s.

Key players representing England consists of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Daniel Sturridge.

Wayne Rooney is known as one of England’s most impactful players and is noted to be the country’s best player. He plays forward for Manchester United and the England national team. Rooney made his debut in 2003 when he became the youngest soccer player to represent England. He is also England’s youngest ever goal scorer. He has received multiple awards and honors throughout his career; the most notable awards: FIFPro World 11, 2009 PFA Player’s Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, Premier League Player of the Month and BBC’s ‘Goal of the Season’ award. 

Steven Gerrard plays for and is team captain for both Liverpool and the England national team. He has hold the position of center midfielder but also plays second striker, holding midfielder, right back and right winger. His honors include: two FA Cups, three League Cups, one Champions League, one UEFA Cup, and two Super Cups. Gerrard made his debut in 2000 and has since represented England at the 2000 and 2004 European Champions as well as the 2006 and 2010 World Cup. Gerrard became the sixth player in England’s team history to win 100 caps and is currently the third in England’s all-time appearance list. He is noted to be one the greatest midfielders in history and to date, he is the only player to ever have scored a goal in the FA Cup Final, League Cup Final, UEFA Cup Final and Champions League Final.

Frank Lampard plays as a central midfielder for Chelsea and the England National Team.  He is the all-time leading scorer for Chelsea and is noted to be the best midfielder in history. Lampard debuted in 2001 and has since made 164 consecutive Premier League appearances. He has been awarded numerous honors including: Chelsea Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, FWA World Player of the Year, FWA Tribute Award, and England Player of the Year. He currently holds the record for England’s most penalty taker with nine goals.

Daniel Sturridge is a striker for Liverpool and the England National Team. He made his debut in 2007 as the only player to ever score in the FA Youth Cup, FA Cup and Premier League in the same year. He previously played for Chelsea and the Bolton Wanderers. He signed with Liverpool in January of 2013 and has since made 15 appearances and scored four goals for the Under-21 team. He made his debut for England against Sweden in 2011.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup Group D also includes 2012 Euro finalists Italy, the 2010 World Cup semifinalists Uruguay, and Costa Rica. England will open against Italy Saturday, June 14 in Manaus, Brazil to kick off the 2014 World Cup.
